Adding draftwatermark package to a book made pdflatex build die. I tried raising main_memory but no change (still indicated old value). I then added to /usr/pkg/share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf:

main_memory.pdflatex = 6000000

and ran:

fmtutil --all

which updated my ~/.texmf-var/web2c files.

Well I never got my book to build with draftwatermark as it kept using more and more memory and failed even at

12000001 words of memory out of 12000000

Without the draftwatermark, same book is:

132876 words of memory out of 1000000
